Strictly speaking, the “aphrodisiac” perfume does not exist, but some smells can be very sensual and titillate more than one(s). So which notes are capable of awakening our desire with a simple wake?
Animal notes for a wild trail
Most so-called sensual fragrances are closely linked… to animal secretions! At first glance, it’s hard to imagine that we envelop ourselves in such smells, and yet perfumery would not be the same without them.
Thus, animal notes have a very strong sexual connotation (aphrodisiac) and are found in many juices.
- Musk: it comes from the glands of the male musk buckskin, an animal native to Asia, which attracts females thanks to this very fragrant secretion, located in a pocket between the navel and the sexual organs. Several years ago, musk taken directly from the animal, inevitably leading to its death. Now banned in perfumery, it has been replaced by synthetic musk.
- The castoreum: from the sexual glands of the beaver, this oily substance gives off a very strong smell of leather and smoke. Widely used in fragrances of the chypre family.
- The civet: the secretion of this animal, taken directly under its tail, bears the same name as it. Unprocessed, the civet has a fecal odor, but once dissolved, it gives roundness to the fragrances.
- Ambergris: an intestinal secretion produced by the sperm whale. After expulsion, harvested to enter into the composition of perfumes. It gives off a very subtle iodine and animal smell.
The leather fragrances also evoke the animal side with their smell of tanned skin. “Cuir de Russie” by Chanel and “Bel Ami” by Hermès worthy representatives of this olfactory family highly prized by men. But also by women in search of a fragrance of character.
The sensuality of furry perfumes
The furry fragrances are formulated with oriental notes that leave behind spicy scents. Patchouli, vanilla, sandalwood and myrrh the main notes found in these enveloping and warm juices.
Among the best-known oriental fragrances are Original Musk by Kiehl’s and Aromatics Elixir by Clinique.
The chypres, fragrances of character
The olfactory scheme of the chypre scents – bergamot in the top note, patchouli and oakmoss in the base note and cistus in the heart note – results in a floral, strong and sensual trail.
Inspired by Coty’s “Cyprus”, the so-called “chypre” perfume has a strong character that generally does not leave you indifferent. “Mitsouko” by Guerlain and “Miss Dior” by Christian Dior are among the most emblematic perfumes of this olfactory family.
Fragrant and charming flowers
The jasmine would, according to some perfumers, of euphoric virtues and pink , ultimate symbol of sensuality, would also be capable of awakening sexuality. Also said that the tuberose, very coveted in perfumery, would have an odor similar to that of the sex of women. Ylang-ylang and lily are also notes with strong erotic potential.
